DOES MULIT-PLAYER WORK ON-LINE?

I tried this game specifically for multi-playing and liked the game, but the multi-player option must only work over a LAN, not on-line. Am I correct?

I have gotten three other friends to purchase this game, but I was unable to connect last night for the first time. Am I pissing in the wind trying to play my friends on-line?
